A Rivian VIN is a 17-character identifier on every Rivian built in Normal, Illinois. VINs beginning 7FC are R1T trucks; 7PD covers the R1S SUV and delivery vans. Decoding is free and reveals model, year and configuration, but it does not show title brands, theft, or accident history.

How to read each position of a Rivian VIN

  • Positions 1–3, WMI: World Manufacturer Identifier. Identifies the maker and country of origin.
  • Positions 4–8, VDS: Vehicle Descriptor Section. Encodes body style, engine, restraint system, and model line.
  • Position 9, Check digit: Math-derived validator. A failed check digit can indicate a typo or a cloned VIN.
  • Position 10, Model year: Single character; see the table below.
  • Position 11, Assembly plant: Manufacturer-specific code for the factory.
  • Positions 12–17, Sequence: Sequential production number unique to that car.

The position-7 rule: year codes repeat every 30 years. If position 7 is a letter the vehicle is 2010 or newer; if a digit it's 2009 or older. Letters I, O, Q, U, Z are never year codes.

Plant codes vary by model line, the decoder above returns the registered plant for your exact VIN.

Where to find the VIN on a Rivian

  • On a metal plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side (visible from outside).
  • On a sticker on the driver's door jamb.
  • Stamped on the engine block or firewall on many models.
  • On the title, registration, and insurance card, always confirm the paperwork matches the physical VIN. Mismatches are a serious red flag.

Rivian title & history red flags to check before you buy

Decoding a VIN tells you how a vehicle was built. To see what happened to it, you need a full vehicle history report, which surfaces title brands, odometer readings, theft records, and more.

Total-loss economics on a young fleet

Rivians are expensive to repair (large aluminum body sections, certified-shop network still small); EV total-loss frequency hit 9.93% in Q1 2024, close to the 9.51% rate for new ICE vehicles in the same period (Mitchell, Q1 2024). Early R1Ts with moderate damage are showing up at salvage auctions.

Open recalls on nearly the whole early fleet

The 2022 steering-knuckle recall (22V-744) covered 12,212 vehicles, most of everything built to that point. Verify completion.

Commercial-fleet titles

EDV/RCV vans (7PD) are commercial vehicles, mostly Amazon fleet units, fleet history and high duty cycles matter if these ever hit resale.

OTA-fixed recalls leave no service paper trail

Several Rivian recalls are remedied via over-the-air software; absence of a dealer record doesn't mean the recall was done.

NHTSA 22V-744: 12,212 MY2022 R1T/R1S/EDV, insufficiently torqued steering-knuckle fastener; inspection/re-torque. Multiple smaller campaigns (seat-belt, software-remedied items) listed on Rivian's recall page, check by VIN.

Buying an electric Rivian?

Battery state-of-health is not in any history report, Rivian's app/service can produce a battery report; ask the seller. Confirm which battery pack (Standard/Large/Max) the VIN decodes to, since range and value differ sharply. TitlePull covers consumer R1T/R1S; commercial delivery vans fall outside passenger-vehicle support, verify eligibility before purchase.

What to check on a used Rivian

A used Rivian can be an excellent buy, but the condition you can see during a test drive is only part of the picture. Two vehicles with the same year, mileage, and asking price can have completely different histories, and the difference usually lives in the paperwork rather than under the hood.

Start with maintenance evidence. Ask for service records covering oil changes, cooling system work, brakes, tires, and any major repair, and be skeptical of a seller who offers a single recent receipt instead of a history. Inspect for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, replacement lights, and fresh undercoating, since all of them can mask prior collision repair. Look for rust on the frame, rocker panels, and brake lines if the vehicle spent time in a salt state.

Flood damage is the pattern buyers miss most often. Storm-damaged vehicles are frequently repaired, moved to another state, and retitled, so check for musty odors, silt under the carpet and in the spare tire well, corroded seat rails and bolts, and moisture inside light housings. A car that smells strongly of air freshener deserves a closer look.

Before money changes hands, verify the four items a visual inspection cannot answer: whether the title carries a brand such as salvage, junk, rebuilt, or flood, whether the recorded odometer readings move forward consistently over time, whether the vehicle was ever declared a total loss or reported stolen, and whether a lien is still open against it. Recall completion on the exact VIN belongs on that list too.

Rivian VIN decoder: frequently asked questions

Consumer Rivians start with 7FC (R1T pickup) or 7PD (R1S SUV; also used for the delivery vans). The leading "7" indicates US manufacture, every Rivian so far is built in Normal, Illinois. A Rivian VIN starting with anything else deserves scrutiny.
Yes. Free decoding shows model, model year, battery/drive configuration and plant. It will not show whether the truck was totaled, salvage-branded, stolen or has a lien, that's title history, available in TitlePull's $9.99 NMVTIS report with no subscription.
High repair costs (aluminum construction, mostly OEM parts, 89.29% of EV repair parts are OEM per Mitchell) plus falling used-EV values push insurers past the total-loss threshold quickly. Always check a used Rivian for salvage or rebuilt title brands before buying.
Check rivian.com/support/article/recall-information or NHTSA.gov with the VIN. The 2022 steering-knuckle recall (22V-744) required a physical inspection; many other Rivian fixes ship over-the-air and won't appear in any service record.
Driver's-side windshield base, driver's door jamb label, and vehicle documents. Cross-check all of them, early-production, high-value trucks are attractive cloning targets.
No. Title-history reports show brands, theft, salvage and total-loss records, not battery state-of-health. Request a battery health report through Rivian service and pair it with a $9.99 title check for full coverage.
Model year: N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025. Rivian production began with 2022 models, so anything decoding earlier than N is suspect.
The EDV/RCV vans share the 7PD WMI but are commercial vehicles. TitlePull's reports cover consumer cars and trucks; commercial vans may not be supported, decode the VIN first and contact support if unsure.
