A Harley-Davidson VIN is a 17-character code (1981 and newer) stamped on the steering neck of the frame. US-built Harleys begin with 1HD or 5HD. Decoding is free and reveals model family, engine and plant, but it does not show title brands, theft, or accident history.

How to read each position of a Harley-Davidson VIN

  • Positions 1–3, WMI: World Manufacturer Identifier. Identifies the maker and country of origin.
  • Positions 4–8, VDS: Vehicle Descriptor Section. Encodes body style, engine, restraint system, and model line.
  • Position 9, Check digit: Math-derived validator. A failed check digit can indicate a typo or a cloned VIN.
  • Position 10, Model year: Single character; see the table below.
  • Position 11, Assembly plant: Manufacturer-specific code for the factory.
  • Positions 12–17, Sequence: Sequential production number unique to that car.

Where to find the VIN on a Harley-Davidson

  • Stamped on the steering neck (most common location).
  • On the frame near the engine, check both sides.
  • On the title, registration, and insurance card.
  • Always confirm the stamped VIN matches the paperwork, mismatches are the single most common sign of a problem bike.

Harley-Davidson title & history red flags to check before you buy

Decoding a VIN tells you how a vehicle was built. To see what happened to it, you need a full vehicle history report, which surfaces title brands, odometer readings, theft records, and more.

High theft counts, low recovery

5,811 Harley-Davidsons were reported stolen in 2021 (top-five brand), and only about 42% of stolen motorcycles are ever recovered, versus a far higher recovery rate for cars. A theft record check is non-negotiable.

Frame/engine number swaps

The engine case number is NOT the VIN; the legal VIN lives on the steering neck. Mismatched or restamped numbers indicate theft or frame swaps.

Rebuilt-salvage customs

Wrecked Harleys are routinely rebuilt as "customs", the title brand follows the frame even if every body panel is new.

Open suspension/brake recalls

2018–2023 Softails have an active rear shock preload-adjuster recall (23V-591) and an ~82,100-unit tire-pressure campaign, verify completion before purchase.

Harley-Davidson recalls: check before you buy

NHTSA 23V-591 (H-D 0181): 65,224 MY2018–2023 Softails, rear shock preload adjuster fastener can fracture and contact the rear tire. Softail tire-pressure recall: ~82,100 motorcycles recalled for pressure-loss/crash risk.

Recall counts shown by the free tool are model-level context for this model year, not a VIN-specific verdict. VIN-specific recall completion status is in the $9.99 report.

Motorcycle-specific checks

Find the VIN on the steering neck/frame head, not the engine case. Confirm 17 characters for 1981+ bikes (pre-1981 Harleys use shorter formats TitlePull can't process). Check theft history first, recovery rates are poor, and stolen-bike VIN swaps are a known pattern. TitlePull supports motorcycle NMVTIS reports at the same $9.99 flat price.

What to check on a used Harley-Davidson

A used Harley-Davidson is judged on how it was stored, ridden, and titled, not on mileage alone. Low-mileage bikes that sat for years can need more work than a well-maintained higher-mileage machine, so ask when the bike last ran regularly and what was done to prepare it after storage.

Inspect the frame and steering neck stamping and confirm it matches the paperwork exactly, since motorcycle VIN mismatches are the clearest warning sign of a problem bike. Look at fork seals, primary and transmission fluid history, and any evidence of a drop such as scraped controls, replaced levers, or fresh paint on one side only. Aftermarket exhaust and tuning changes are common and should be documented.

Theft and salvage brands are more common on motorcycles than on cars because a dropped bike can total quickly on paper while looking straight after repair. Parted-and-rebuilt bikes also circulate widely.

Before buying, verify the title brand history, recorded odometer readings, salvage and total-loss records, theft records, any open lien, and whether recalls were completed on this exact VIN.

Harley-Davidson VIN decoder: frequently asked questions

Stamped into the steering neck (frame head), visible by turning the bars and looking at the frame below them; also on the right side of the frame on many models and on the title. The engine case number is a separate identifier, never treat it as the VIN.
Enter the 17 characters into a free decoder: positions 1–3 identify Harley and country, 4 is weight class, 5–6 the model, 7 the engine, 10 the model year, 11 the assembly plant. Free decoding shows specs only, title and theft history requires a $9.99 report.
1HD is Harley-Davidson's main World Manufacturer Identifier for US-built heavyweight motorcycles, "1" = United States, "HD" = Harley-Davidson. Most Harleys on US roads start with it; 5HD also appears on US production.
NICB data put Harley-Davidson at 5,811 thefts in 2021, consistently a top-five stolen brand. Across all motorcycles, roughly 50,000 are stolen annually and only about four in ten are recovered, far worse than cars. Always run a theft and title check.
Mainstream car-report brands generally don't cover motorcycles. Motorcycle-specialist services often charge $25 or more. TitlePull supports motorcycles with 17-character VINs at $9.99 flat, pulling the same NMVTIS title, brand and theft data.
Position 10: a letter or digit on the standard NHTSA table (e.g., M = 2021, N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024). Pre-1981 Harleys don't follow the 17-character standard and can't be decoded this way.
Position 11: Y = York, Pennsylvania (current main plant), K = Kansas City (closed 2019), T = Tomahawk, Wisconsin. Plant codes help verify a bike's claimed history matches its actual origin.
The brand follows the VIN through NMVTIS even across state lines, but a seller can simply not mention it. Heavily customized bikes are the classic disguise for salvage rebuilds, a $9.99 title check exposes the brand history in seconds.
