A Jeep VIN is a 17-character identifier on every Jeep built since 1981. Modern US-built Jeeps start with 1C4 (Stellantis/FCA); older models use 1J4 or 1J8; Mexico-built Compass uses 3C4 and Italy-built Renegades use ZAC. Decoding is free, but a decode never shows title brands, flood damage, or odometer history.

How to read each position of a Jeep VIN

  • Positions 1–3, WMI: World Manufacturer Identifier. Identifies the maker and country of origin.
  • Positions 4–8, VDS: Vehicle Descriptor Section. Encodes body style, engine, restraint system, and model line.
  • Position 9, Check digit: Math-derived validator. A failed check digit can indicate a typo or a cloned VIN.
  • Position 10, Model year: Single character; see the table below.
  • Position 11, Assembly plant: Manufacturer-specific code for the factory.
  • Positions 12–17, Sequence: Sequential production number unique to that car.

The position-7 rule: year codes repeat every 30 years. If position 7 is a letter the vehicle is 2010 or newer; if a digit it's 2009 or older. Letters I, O, Q, U, Z are never year codes.

Plant codes vary by model line, the decoder above returns the registered plant for your exact VIN.

Where to find the VIN on a Jeep

  • On a metal plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side (visible from outside).
  • On a sticker on the driver's door jamb.
  • Stamped on the engine block or firewall on many models.
  • On the title, registration, and insurance card, always confirm the paperwork matches the physical VIN. Mismatches are a serious red flag.

Jeep title & history red flags to check before you buy

Decoding a VIN tells you how a vehicle was built. To see what happened to it, you need a full vehicle history report, which surfaces title brands, odometer readings, theft records, and more.

Off-road damage never appears on a title

Hard trail use (rock damage, bent frames, deep-water crossings) won't brand a title, but a history report exposes the insurance total-loss and salvage-auction events that follow the worst incidents, plus repeated short ownership stints.

Flood exposure is a Wrangler-specific risk

Open tops, removable doors, and intentional water fording make Wranglers unusually flood-prone; flood-branded vehicles also reappear with washed titles in new states, NMVTIS brand history follows the VIN.

Frame rust on older Wranglers (TJ/JK)

Frame rust can compromise structural integrity; northern-state title chains visible in a history report tell you where the Jeep actually lived.

4xe fire-recall exposure

320,065 Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEVs are under a park-outside battery fire recall, check recall status and any fire-related salvage records by VIN.

Odometer fraud incentive from strong resale value

Wranglers hold value unusually well, making rollbacks profitable on high-mileage examples; NMVTIS odometer records across transfers expose them.

Jeep recalls: check before you buy

A 4xe PHEV battery fire / park-outside recall (2020–2026) covers 320,065 vehicles, 228,221 Wrangler 4xe (2020–2025) and 91,844 Grand Cherokee 4xe (2022–2026), for battery cells with separator damage that can cause fires parked or driving. A separate Grand Cherokee 4xe engine-block debris recall flagged leftover casting sand that could cause engine failure and/or fire in certain GC PHEVs. The Uconnect remote-hack recall (2015) covered ~1.4 million vehicles, including Jeeps, after researchers demonstrated remote control of a Cherokee, an early landmark software recall.

Buying a Jeep hybrid or EV?

Jeep's 4xe plug-in hybrids are central to the brand, the Wrangler 4xe alone was 55,554 units (about 37% of Wrangler sales) in 2024, and they carry the brand's biggest recall: 320,065 PHEVs under a park-outside fire campaign. On any used 4xe, confirm recall remedy completion by VIN and check the title for fire or total-loss brands before buying.

What to check on a used Jeep

Jeeps are bought to be used, so a used Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, or Cherokee is more likely than average to have seen off-road duty, water crossings, aftermarket lifts, and oversized tires. None of that is disqualifying, but all of it changes the inspection.

Look underneath for skid plate damage, bent control arms, and differential leaks. On lifted vehicles, check whether the modification was done properly, since poor geometry causes premature wear in steering and driveline components. On Grand Cherokee, ask about air suspension and electronics history. Water crossings can introduce moisture into axles and transfer cases, so ask when those fluids were last changed.

Flood-damaged Jeeps are a distinct concern because buyers expect some mud and wet history, which makes real flood damage easier to disguise. Theft rates on Wranglers are also high, and recovered vehicles sometimes return to market repaired.

Confirm the title brand history, odometer readings over time, salvage and total-loss records, theft records, open liens, and VIN-specific recall completion before you buy.

Jeep VIN decoder: frequently asked questions

Driver-side dashboard at the windshield base, driver-door jamb sticker, and on the frame. Wranglers also commonly have the VIN stamped on the firewall, useful because doors and tops are removable.
1C4 is the World Manufacturer Identifier for FCA US LLC (Stellantis) SUVs built in the USA, all current Wranglers and Grand Cherokees. Older Jeeps used 1J4/1J8; Mexico-built Compass uses 3C4; Italy-built Renegades use ZAC.
Position 10: J = 2018, K = 2019, L = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025. JL-generation Wranglers began with the 2018 model year.
Yes, specs, year, and plant decode free at TitlePull. What free decoding can't show: flood/salvage/rebuilt brands, theft records, and odometer history. That's NMVTIS and state title data, in a $9.99 flat-fee report.
Run a title check for flood and salvage brands first, Wranglers are unusually flood-exposed and flood titles get "washed" across state lines. Then inspect for musty carpet, silt under seats, and corroded connectors, per FTC guidance.
320,065 Wrangler 4xe (2020–2025) and Grand Cherokee 4xe (2022–2026) PHEVs are recalled for battery fire risk with park-outside guidance. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or Stellantis' recall site for status and remedy completion.
Not directly, trail damage isn't a title event. But a history report reveals the aftermath of serious incidents: insurance total-loss records, salvage-auction listings, junk/dismantler reports, and suspicious ownership churn.
Every Wrangler and Gladiator is built at the Toledo Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio. Grand Cherokees come from Detroit; the Compass from Toluca, Mexico; and the Renegade from Melfi, Italy.
