A Lucid VIN is a 17-character code on every Lucid Air and Gravity, all built in Casa Grande, Arizona. Lucid VINs typically begin with 50E, a US small-volume manufacturer identifier. Decoding is free and shows trim and model year, but it does not show title, theft, or accident history.

How to read each position of a Lucid VIN

  • Positions 1–3, WMI: World Manufacturer Identifier. Identifies the maker and country of origin.
  • Positions 4–8, VDS: Vehicle Descriptor Section. Encodes body style, engine, restraint system, and model line.
  • Position 9, Check digit: Math-derived validator. A failed check digit can indicate a typo or a cloned VIN.
  • Position 10, Model year: Single character; see the table below.
  • Position 11, Assembly plant: Manufacturer-specific code for the factory.
  • Positions 12–17, Sequence: Sequential production number unique to that car.

The position-7 rule: year codes repeat every 30 years. If position 7 is a letter the vehicle is 2010 or newer; if a digit it's 2009 or older. Letters I, O, Q, U, Z are never year codes.

Plant codes vary by model line, the decoder above returns the registered plant for your exact VIN.

Where to find the VIN on a Lucid

  • On a metal plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side (visible from outside).
  • On a sticker on the driver's door jamb.
  • Stamped on the engine block or firewall on many models.
  • On the title, registration, and insurance card, always confirm the paperwork matches the physical VIN. Mismatches are a serious red flag.

Lucid title & history red flags to check before you buy

Decoding a VIN tells you how a vehicle was built. To see what happened to it, you need a full vehicle history report, which surfaces title brands, odometer readings, theft records, and more.

Steep depreciation + expensive repairs = salvage titles

Six-figure MSRPs depreciated fast; EV total-loss frequency was 9.93% in Q1 2024, close to the 9.51% rate for new ICE vehicles in the same period (Mitchell, Q1 2024), and luxury repair costs push lightly used salvage-branded Airs into auction below market.

Multiple wiring-harness recalls

At least 1,117 early Airs had an instrument-display harness defect (blank gauge cluster); 2024–2025 Airs had a rear-drive-unit harness recall causing possible power loss (24V-836). Verify completion.

Very young fleet, thin service-history paper trail

Deliveries only began late 2021; OTA fixes and a small service network mean sparse records, lean on title data, not service stamps.

Lien risk on high-ticket financing

Expensive cars carry large loan balances; an undisclosed lien on a private-party Air is a five-figure problem. NMVTIS-backed reports surface lien/title chains.

Lucid recalls: check before you buy

Display wiring-harness recall: at least 1,117 MY2022 Airs, instrument panel could go blank (speed, warnings hidden). NHTSA 24V-836: 2024–2025 Air, shortened RDU subframe wiring harness can cause reduced or complete loss of drive power.

Buying an electric Lucid?

No history report shows battery state-of-health, ask Lucid service for an SOH report. Confirm the VIN's trim decode matches the listing (Pure vs Grand Touring is a ~$40k difference). Check that recall 24V-836 and any display-harness work are closed; Lucid's service network is small, so out-of-region cars may have skipped campaigns.

What to check on a used Lucid

A used Lucid can be an excellent buy, but the condition you can see during a test drive is only part of the picture. Two vehicles with the same year, mileage, and asking price can have completely different histories, and the difference usually lives in the paperwork rather than under the hood.

Start with maintenance evidence. Ask for service records covering oil changes, cooling system work, brakes, tires, and any major repair, and be skeptical of a seller who offers a single recent receipt instead of a history. Inspect for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, replacement lights, and fresh undercoating, since all of them can mask prior collision repair. Look for rust on the frame, rocker panels, and brake lines if the vehicle spent time in a salt state.

Flood damage is the pattern buyers miss most often. Storm-damaged vehicles are frequently repaired, moved to another state, and retitled, so check for musty odors, silt under the carpet and in the spare tire well, corroded seat rails and bolts, and moisture inside light housings. A car that smells strongly of air freshener deserves a closer look.

Before money changes hands, verify the four items a visual inspection cannot answer: whether the title carries a brand such as salvage, junk, rebuilt, or flood, whether the recorded odometer readings move forward consistently over time, whether the vehicle was ever declared a total loss or reported stolen, and whether a lien is still open against it. Recall completion on the exact VIN belongs on that list too.

Lucid VIN decoder: frequently asked questions

Lucid Air VINs typically begin 50EA1, "5" marks US manufacture and 50E identifies Lucid as a manufacturer. Every Lucid is built at the AMP-1 factory in Casa Grande, Arizona. Run a free decode to confirm trim, motor count and model year.
Decoding is free, year, trim, drivetrain, plant. Title history is not: salvage/rebuilt brands, theft records, total-loss declarations and liens come from state DMV data via NMVTIS. TitlePull bundles that for $9.99 flat, no subscription.
Rapid depreciation is partly normal for luxury EVs, but unusually cheap Airs are often salvage-rebuilt. Repair costs on a low-volume aluminum EV are high, so insurers total them readily. Always check title brands before assuming you found a bargain.
No, battery state-of-health isn't in any title-history database. Reports cover brands, theft, salvage and odometer records. Pair a $9.99 title check with a Lucid service-center battery report for a complete picture.
The early display wiring-harness recall (blank instrument panel) and the 2024 rear-drive-unit harness recall (24V-836, possible loss of power). Check NHTSA.gov by VIN, and remember some Lucid fixes deploy over-the-air without a service record.
Base of the windshield (driver's side), driver's door jamb label, and the title and insurance card. All must match. The Air's frunk area also carries identification labels on many builds.
Positions 4–8 encode platform and trim attributes, a free decode returns Pure, Touring, Grand Touring or Sapphire along with motor configuration. Verify the decode against the listing; trim misrepresentation is common on rebuilt cars.
Gravity SUVs come from the same Arizona plant and manufacturer identifier family, but the model code in positions 4–8 differs from the Air. The fleet is very young, title history should be short; any brand on a nearly new Gravity is a major warning.
